“The Rat Race” portrays the contemporary human condition — a way of life in which the individual is caught in an endless, merciless race for wealth, status and power. It is a world where everyone is running, striving to come first and reach an ideal of success that constantly remains just out of reach.

Within this cycle of relentless competition, falling is inevitable. When a person stumbles, the race does not stop — on the contrary, the world around them swallows them whole. Behind them lurk the hunters, figures of a harsh reality that knows no mercy. What begins as a pursuit of success becomes a struggle for survival, an instinctive attempt to preserve whatever remains of one’s humanity.

The cycle continues from one generation to the next. The same dynamic repeats itself; only the faces change. At the end of the track, a third force enters the story — the vultures. They neither run nor hunt. They wait. Their beaks already stained with the blood of previous falls, they stand ready to feed on the consequences of other people’s ambitions.

Through the metaphor of the race and the vultures, the work explores the endless pursuit of success and the price it demands. “The Rat Race” asks a question that often remains unanswered: Is it worth being the first to finish if, in the end, the race eats you alive?

Ertunc Sali and Angela Boshevska explore this theme through a combination of traditional and contemporary artistic techniques. Taking different approaches to the subject, their drive to move beyond the limitations of two-dimensional work leads them to experiment with installations, sculptures and paintings brought to life through light and darkness. Together, these works create a distinct visual experience for the audience.

This art project is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of N.Macedonia.
